One of my favorite holiday traditions is baking and decorating cookies, specifically sugar cookies. Something magical seems to happen when frosting, colored sugar, edible glitter and chocolate come together and collide over perfectly baked cookies. Here is one of my favorite family recipes.ROLLED SUGAR COOKIES
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 5 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla then stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour, preferably overnight. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out dough on very well floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes and place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes and cool completely before decorating.
