Quick kitchen fixes


Despite our best efforts, every cook has run into some kind of kitchen conundrum at one point oranother. Don't be afraid to learn from those who have come before you. These are some of the most common kitchen blunders and how to fix them.


Acidic foods tomato based sauces may become too acidic. To help balance this, add a teaspoon of baking soda at a time to the sauce until the sauce has the flavor you desire. 
Burnt food on pots & pans allow pan to cool then remove as much food from the pan as you can. Fill with hot water and add a capful of liquid fabric softener or a dryer sheet and let soak overnight. 
Frozen whipped topping if you forget to thaw out whipped topping, microwave it for one minute on the defrost setting and stir well to blend.
Garlic or onion smell rub your hands with a stainless steel spoon while rinsing them under cold water. You can also purchase a stainless steel “bar” of soap from Amazon. This also works to rid your hands of the smell of fish and seafood. 
Hard brown sugar Store brown sugar with a slice of bread or a brown sugar keeper. You can also place hard chunks in your food processor and process them to break them up.
Lumpy gravy Use a blender or food processor and process until smooth or use a strainer.
Overcooked sweet potatoes too soft sweet potatoes can be used to make a souffle  or pie filling.
Stale bread you can toast the bread or microwave it very briefly before using it. If that doesn’t help, it can be turned into bread crumbs.
Soup, sauce, gravy is too thin add a tablespoon of flour and whisk well to avoid lumps while the mixture is boiling.
Sticky rice rinse under warm water.
Soup or stew is greasy refrigerate and lift off grease once hardened.
Too salty add a little sugar and vinegar to balance out the saltiness. For soups and sauce, add a raw, peeled potato.
Too sweet add a little vinegar or lemon juice to balance out the sweetness.
Underbaked cake or cookies crumble over ice cream for a quick and easy dessert. You can also break them into large pieces and layer with fruit, whipped cream, pudding, etc to make parfaits.
